Proteinuria

Normal urinary protein is <150mg in 24 hours.

Causes of proteinuria include:

Transient proteinuria:
  • UTI
  • Fever
  • Heavy exercise
  • Pregnancy

Persistent proteinuria
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Amyloidosis
  • Myeloma
  • Hypertension
  • Connective tissue diseases
  • Vasculitis
  • Congestive cardiac failure

Small print gem: orthostatic proteinuria is proteinuria that occurs after standing for a prolonged period and is not present in early morning urine. It is rare in people older than 30 but occurs in up to 5% of adolescents.
