Proteinuria

Normal urinary protein is <150mg in 24 hours. 

Causes of proteinuria include:

Transient proteinuria:
  • UTI 
  • Fever 
  • Heavy exercise 
  • Pregnancy 

Persistent proteinuria 
  • Glomerulonephritis 
  • Diabetes mellitus 
  • Amyloidosis 
  • Myeloma 
  • Hypertension 
  • Connective tissue diseases 
  • Vasculitis 
  • Congestive cardiac failure 

Small print gem: orthostatic proteinuria is proteinuria that occurs after standing for a prolonged period and is not present in early morning urine. It is rare in people older than 30 but occurs in up to 5% of adolescents.
