Basophilic stippling

Basophilic stippling of erythrocytes (as illustrated diagrammatically below) is a non-specific finding which an American study suggests occurs in around 25% of medical inpatients. 






The classical conditions associated with basophilic however are 
  • Lead poisoning 
  • Sideroblastic anaemia
  • Thalassemia
