Malignant hyperthermia

Malignant hyperthermia is a life-threatening hypermetabolic response to potent inhalation agents or succinylcholine in susceptible individuals. 

It is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion.

Signs of malignant hyperthermia include: 
  • Sustained jaw rigidity after succinylcholine 
  • Hypercapnia 
  • Tachycardia 
  • Hyperthermia 
  • Increased oxygen consumption 
  • Acidosis 

Complications include: 
  • Renal failure 
  • DIC 
  • Hyperkalaemia leading to arrhythmias 
  • Bowel ischaemia 

Treatment is with dantrolene.
