Malignant hyperthermia is a life-threatening hypermetabolic response to potent inhalation agents or succinylcholine in susceptible individuals.
It is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion.
Signs of malignant hyperthermia include:
- Sustained jaw rigidity after succinylcholine
- Hypercapnia
- Tachycardia
- Hyperthermia
- Increased oxygen consumption
- Acidosis
Complications include:
- Renal failure
- DIC
- Hyperkalaemia leading to arrhythmias
- Bowel ischaemia
Treatment is with dantrolene.
